Pretty good but ugly UI

I have been trying to keep Now-Up-To-Date alive on my various Macs for years as it became less and less usable. I researched all the Mac calendars available, and none of them are as good as NUD—the ability to see the text contents for every event in the day at the same time, and the excellent, customizable interface were superior to what BusyCal provides. I had hoped to use FantastiCal, since the interface is really attractive, but BusyCal made the event contents visible without having to open events in a separate window, so I went with the latter. The big white & grey interface is pretty ugly, and I can’t add graphics and change colors of individual events (I can only add color for entire calendars), so it looks like a 25-year-old app. Since I look at it all day every day, and since I’m a hardcore Mac guy, that experience is less than optimal. So I will rate it as “the best available” at present, even though I’m not crazy about it by any means.
